Montrose
Montrose is a neighborhood located near the Downtown area of Houston, between Downtown, the Texas Medical Center and River Oaks. This Real Estate market caters to what is considered one of the most demographically diverse areas of Houston with renovated mansions, bungalows with wide porches and cottages located along tree-lined boulevards. Montrose houses and commercial establishments have become increasingly gentrified with a trend towards remodeled and new homes, high rents, up-market boutiques and restaurants. On Montrose Blvd. and Westheimer Rd. there are few original Montrose Homes remaining with the majority having been converted to businesses and restaurants. Howard Hughes old mansion on Yoakum St. is now part of the University of St. Thomas and Lyndon Johnson lived on Hawthorne St. when he taught school in the 1920s.
More recently the Montrose area hosts a significantly diverse population including artists, gay men and lesbians, hippies, punk rockers and some of the very wealthiest. Montrose is a pedestrian-friendly Houston neighborhood with a strong identity built up over its long history. Several music venues are found area with Anderson Fair noted as one of the oldest folk and original music venues in continuous operation in the United States. The Houston Museum of Fine Arts and the Contemporary Arts Museum are located on south Montrose.
